Curator's Choice!
Favorite, Unusual, and Unidentifiable Items from OJM's Collection
September 19, 2004 - January 2, 2005

Curator's Choice! emphasized the best and the most unusual objects in OJM's collection and included such oddities as an electric Yortzeit "candle" and such rarities as a collection of photographs depicting the Yiddish theater of Sholem Aleichem. A small collection of passports, citizenship papers and voter registration cards reminded visitors about the upcoming Presidential election of 2004. Portland City Commissioner Mildred Schwab's cocktail dress, Sarah Bloch's wedding dress, letters from composer Ernst Bloch, and the scrapbook belonging to JCC swim teacher MIckey Hirschberg brought to life individuals in Oregon's Jewish history. Significant artworks in the collection, including works by Chaim Goldberg, Ira Moskowitz, and Jeanne Moment rounded out the exhibit.

This exhibit also provided a glimpse into the collecting practices of the museum, helping visitors to understand why we collect what we do.
