DAFFF: Paper Lace: Illuminations and Blessings
July 1, 2002 - September 2, 2002

This exhibit consisted of words created by dafff, a group of four Tel Aviv artists-Daniel Davis, Shoshi Feuerlicht, Nitza Karpel Flantz, and Richard Flantz. After 25 years of shared experience, they decided to work together on a joint project: to create works that would bring new life, light and color to Jewish values, by taking textual and ornamental motifs from the Jewish heritage, and recombining them in fresh new ways that can be artistically meaningful for Jewish life today.

The four artists developed the technique or craft of painted and multi-layered "paper-lace" works, in which the paper is worked and treated as a material rather than as a surface. They took texts from the Tanach, the Talmud, the Siddur and other Jewish sources, and images or ornamental patterning from anthologies of Jewish art from all periods and dispersions, finding special inspiration in the tradition of the Jewish paper-cut.
