Mah Jongg Mania:
American Beginnings

Curator Talk with Melissa Martens

Friday, December 9 at 12:00pm

Come hear from Melissa Martens, Director of Collections & Exhibitions at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC, as she explores the early and unknown roots of the game of mah jongg in America.  From the World’s Columbian Exposition, to elite social clubs, to Chinatowns, Hollywood, and suburban Jewish living rooms—discover how the mysterious tile game of “a thousand wonders” became a national pastime.

Melissa Martens is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in New York City, where she has worked since 2008.  She was previously the Curator of the Jewish Museum of Maryland, where she created exhibitions on Jewish department stores, Jewish fashion & beauty, synagogue architecture, and Jewish vacation culture.  She has also worked at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Newberry Library, and the Folger Shakespeare Library.  She has been in the museum and library profession for twenty years, and serves as the Vice-Chair of the board of the Council of American Jewish Museums.  At the Museum of Jewish Heritage, she created the exhibitions “The Morgenthaus: A Legacy of Service” and “Project Mah Jongg”—which is now touring nationally.  Her newest exhibition “Emma Lazarus: Poet of Exiles” opened at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in October 2011, and begins its national tour in 2012.

General Public: $5;  Members: Free  While 50 seats last.
