Chaim Gross: Modernist Drawings
March 6 – May 25, 2008

Although recognized as one of the most influential American avant-garde sculptors, Chaim Gross was also known for his remarkable drawings and watercolors. The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and The Newark Museum all exhibited his works.

OJM presented selected works, on loan from the Renee and Chaim Gross Foundation, that span 70 years of Gross’ career. Gross’s modernism is clearly apparent in his drawings, some of which are remarkable for their meaningful sparseness. A few sweeping, curvilinear lines quickly and miraculously define a figure. A swath of wash or watercolor provides a sense of volume. Some drawings appear dense and complex, but with forms that are simple and abstract, the subject magically appearing from a web of line and wash.  All of them vividly represent the balancing act between realism and abstraction that was the hallmark of Gross’ work.
