In the spring of 2001, the Oregon Jewish Museum launched a project to document the contributions of Oregon Jews in the United States Armed
Services. The response to our call was extraordinary; nearly 300 veterans
or their families shared their stories and loaned artifacts to the Museum. A Call to Serve; Oregon Jews in the Armed Services preserves their tales
of heroism, courage, anti-Semitism, monotony, fear, exhilaration and patriotism.
A Call to Serve was already well underway on September 11, 2001, the day that irrevocably altered the lives of all Americans. As the
United States enters on a new and unprecedented war, it is appropriate to see the faces and to reflect upon the participation of Oregon Jews in the American military. Now and throughout history, Jews have been a continual and dependable military presence. In battles fought far and near, Jewish service men and women have contributed to the freedoms we enjoy today.
