This unique collaboration between PJA fifth graders, the Oregon Jewish Museum, and local artist-in-residence, Lisa Kagan, will feature artifacts, mixed-media collage, and immigration stories from the students' family histories.

In preparation for the exhibit, PJA's fifth graders visited OJM to learn about what defines an artifact and to examine various artifacts in the museum's collection. In addition, they worked for several weeks with Lisa Kagan, who has developed workshops in "Family Heirloom Art." Through interviews and photographs, the students learned about the immigration story of one of their ancestors and represented it using mixed media - photographs, maps, paint, and documents - on a series of panels that tell the story through narrative imagery. In addition, they wrote stories based on their interviews, integrating factual information and the imagined experiences of their family member.
