Leslie Starobin: Shadows Across the Promised Land
Photographs & digital photomontages
September 5 - February 2, 2003

Since the late 1980's, Starobin has been photographing Biblical landscapes in Israel. More recently, she has moved her focus from straight photography to digital works on paper, creating multi-layered photomontages of the region from her conventional negatives. The work poetically reflects upon the turbulent Israeli landscape, weaving together the complex multi-national and personal sources that inform her artistic and cultural identity. The exhibit presented compositions inspired by places steeped in family memory, enriched by artistic and literary tradition, and central to world history and current events.
